On September 15, 2008, the first technical demo was released. Sonic 2 HD was supposed to be released in September 2008. As a result, we used a modified Mega Drive emulator. It was already built, but it wasn’t enough to be used because the physics of the custom engine weren’t close to those of the original Mega Drive series.

One of the most difficult tasks to complete was selecting an engine for the project. A Sonic Retro member who contributed to the Sonic 2 HD project was the one who decided to create it. It is a well-known fact that the Sonic Retro community has a keen interest in all things related to Sonic’s classical era. Artists and animators have taken liberties with story elements and additional detail as a result of S2HD’s inception, and the scope of the technology has grown.

Originally, S2HD was intended to be a straight-edge vector repaint of the original shapes and colors. It is set to be released on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in early 2020. Developed by Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, PagodaWest Games and published by Sega, the remaster will feature updated visuals, new gameplay features and remastered audio.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 HD is an upcoming high-definition remaster of the 1991 Sega Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
